About Lekmak

Welcome to Lekmak

Lekmak means footprint — and it also means presence. It speaks to being there: on the ground, in the moment, and close enough to understand a story before telling it.

We are a Papua New Guinean media organisation committed to documenting the country as it is lived, spoken, and remembered. Our work centres on community-driven journalism and long-form storytelling grounded in firsthand observation, local context, and accountability.

At Lekmak, we believe stories are a form of record. We report on contemporary issues shaping Papua New Guinea while also preserving traditional knowledge, oral histories, and cultural practices that risk being lost with time. Elders and knowledge holders are treated not as sources to be extracted from, but as custodians whose wisdom carries continuity and authority.

Our journalism is rooted in place. Presence matters — because being there changes what you see, what you hear, and what you understand. We work with communities, not around them, building trust through consistency, respect, and accuracy. Local voices sit at the centre of our reporting, because no story about Papua New Guinea is complete without Papua New Guineans speaking for themselves.

We also see youth as inheritors of these stories. Part of our responsibility is to leave behind a clear and honest record — of who we were, what we faced, and how we understood the world — so future generations have something solid to stand on.

Lekmak exists to leave a footprint that lasts, shaped by presence, responsibility, and truth.
